Episode 11 – Addendum (The Truth About the Cup Final

Alex

(The tape recorder clicks back on. I take a sip of espresso, looking at the Supercoppa trophy gleaming on the desk, but my expression is a little more grounded this time. Humility is a rare commodity in this War Room, but it’s required today.)

Act I: A Dose of Reality

I need to set the record straight about that Supercoppa Italiana Final. If I told the press that we completely outclassed Iain’s Lazio with flowing, heavy metal football, I’d be lying to myself and to the boardroom.

The absolute truth? Iain’s team was a nightmare to break down. He set them up brilliantly, and for large stretches of that game, we were genuinely on the ropes. The tactical proxy war was fierce. In fact, across the entire match, my multi-million-pound attacking setup only managed to generate a single clear-cut chance from open play.

So how did we walk away with a 3-1 victory and the confetti?

  • The Roman Implosion: Iain’s defense completely lost their heads under the pressure of a cup final. They didn’t just bend; they broke the rules, gifting us not one, but two penalties. We didn’t carve them open to win that game; they handed us the keys to the castle. I will gladly take the silverware and the bragging rights, but Iain proved he is an incredibly dangerous tactical opponent when his back is against the wall.

Act II: The Caprile Redemption Arc

The most important story of that final, however, wasn’t the penalties. It was the man wearing the gloves.

After the 1-4 collapse against Palermo, I was ready to throw Elia Caprile to the wolves. I had the massive offer for Giorgi Mamardashvili accepted, and the paperwork was literally sitting on my desk waiting for a signature. Caprile was, for all intents and purposes, a dead man walking.

But in the biggest match of the season, against my biggest human rival, Caprile delivered the performance of his life. When Lazio pinned us back and created those genuinely terrifying moments in our penalty area, he stood on his head. He kept us in the game when Iain’s attackers were threatening to tear my script apart. He didn’t just earn his winner’s medal; he practically secured it for us.

The defining factor wasn’t total dominance, but it wasn’t a total robbery either. The defining factor was, as Iain himself admitted in the bottom corner of my screen, the man wearing the gloves.

Act III: The Cliffhanger

Which brings me to the accepted Mamardashvili offer.

You would think a masterclass in a cup final would guarantee a goalkeeper’s future. You would think loyalty would prevail. But this is the Purple Palace, and sentimentality rarely survives the brutal reality of the January transfer window.

As for what actually happens to Caprile next… well, you’ll see.
