Episode 11 – The Supercoppa Revenge and the Roman Final

Alex

(The tape recorder clicks on. The ambient sound of the War Room is replaced by the echoes of a joyous, chaotic dressing room celebration. I am leaning back in my chair, staring at the Supercoppa Italiana trophy resting on my desk. A massive grin is plastered across my face.)

Act I: The San Siro Demons Exorcised

If you want to win trophies, you eventually have to slay your demons. And going into the Supercoppa Italiana Semi-Final, my biggest demon was wearing the blue and black of Inter Milan.

They had humiliated us 4-1 in the Champions League just weeks prior. They were sitting pretty at the top of the Serie A table. And they expected to roll right over us again.

But this wasn’t the same fractured Fiorentina. The safer 4-2-3-1 structure was in place, Lorenzo Lucca was leading the line to anchor the center-backs, and crucially, Albert Guðmundsson was back from the medical ward.

What followed was an absolute shootout; an eight-goal thriller that tested every single nerve I possess.

  • The Early Scare: Ferran Torres headed Inter into the lead in the 11th minute. The ghosts of the 4-1 defeat instantly materialized.
  • The Immediate Response: But we didn’t fold. Literally one minute later, Guðmundsson struck from close range to equalize (12′).
  • The Trading of Blows: Inter took the lead again via a thunderous Pedro Gonçalves free-kick (14′). We responded again, with Riccardo Sottil firing home after a beautiful team move orchestrated by Mandragora (23′).
  • The Guðmundsson Show: Then, the Icelandic winger completely took over. He buried a penalty in the 31st minute to give us the lead.
  • The Collapse of Inter: We forced an unfortunate Dean Huijsen own goal (59′) to stretch the lead, and Guðmundsson completed a spectacular hat-trick with a deflected volley in the 74th minute.

A late Petar Sučić consolation goal (90+2′) couldn’t dampen the mood. We generated 2.32 xG to their 1.48 and buried them 5-3. The San Siro demons were exorcised, and we punched our ticket to the final.

Act II: The Proxy War Supercoppa Final

I looked up at the stadium monitors to see who we would be facing in the Supercoppa Italiana Final.

Of course. It had to be him. Iain had navigated his Lazio side through the other semi-final bracket. The proxy war had officially escalated from a long-term league marathon into a one-off, winner-takes-all cup final.

I won’t lie; the buildup was incredibly tense. I had destroyed him 3-0 in our last league meeting – he was desperate for revenge, and I was desperate to cement my superiority with actual silverware.

Act III: Purple Confetti

The final itself was a masterclass in controlled aggression.

We didn’t just beat him; we thoroughly outclassed his project. We lifted the Supercoppa Italiana after a decisive 3-1 victory.

There is a specific, profound joy in watching the match engine generate the trophy presentation sequence while your human rival is forced to watch. I watched my captain hoist the cup under a shower of sparks and purple confetti. I watched my squad celebrate on the podium.

The proxy war has its first piece of major silverware, and it resides in Florence.

Act IV: The Shadow Moves

While the squad celebrated the Supercoppa victory, Francesco Conti slipped a notification onto my desk. The celebrations are great, but the War Room never sleeps.

Remember that goalkeeper crisis? “Fiorentina’s Mamardashvili offer accepted.”
