Chapter 5: Marc Guéhi’s Betrayal and the Trophy-less Treble (Season 2 Conclusion)
The financial high-wire act looked stable as we entered the final nine games of the season, locked in a ferocious three-way Scudetto fight with Inter and Lazio. This led us to a defining, high-stakes six-pointer against Iain’s sky-blue machine. It was an absolute war that descended into pure match-engine emotional nonsense.
We traded blows constantly, falling behind and storming back, until we held a narrow 3-2 lead deep into the match. Then, in the 85th minute, disaster struck: an uncontested, harmless cross floated into our box, and my captain, Marc Guéhi, rose majestically to bury a bullet header directly into the top corner of his own net. The match ended 3-3, a result that completely broke my psychological focus.
Tilted by the betrayal, we tamely rolled over in the next fixture, losing 1-0 to Inter Milan. When the final whistle blew on the season, we finished in 3rd place—exactly three points behind Iain’s Lazio. Guéhi’s head had literally cost us the Scudetto.
The spring quickly devolved into a trophy-less treble of maximum pain. We battled to the Coppa Italia semi-finals, only for Iain’s former club, Atalanta, to eliminate us with a devastating late winner.
We then marched all the way to the UEFA Europa League Final against AC Milan, completely dominated possession, failed to convert our chances, and conceded a heartbreaking 95th-minute dagger to lose 1-0.
